Last time I wrote on here was Thursday, October 29, when I went to UPS in Palatine, IL, for my interview. Adam, my interviewer told me that as long as my background check was A-okay, the next step would be a phone call for orientation. So, I waited one week, didn t get my phone call, so I called the 2100 N. Hicks Road UPS facility where I had my interview on November 5 to make sure that I didn t miss any phone calls. The woman told me that they were just beginning to set up classes that 1st week of November and that if I didn t receive a phone call by the 2nd week of November, I should call back. Well, I didn t call back last week because I was busy and today, Tuesday, November 17, I got my phone call.

I am to report to the 2100 N. Hicks Road UPS facility, same place I interviewed, at a.m. tomorrow morning. That is the ONLY class that they have scheduled and I am to wear my boots. Luckily, upon anticipation of getting this job, I went out to Rogan s and purchased brown waterproof hiking boots. When Angel called me, he only said to wear my boots and also bring a lunch because it may take 5 or 6 hours depending on the instructor.

Then, again tonight, another girl called me to confirm I was coming to tomorrow s orientation class. She told me it could take 7 hours depending on the instructor. I can t imagine what you do for 7 hours in an orientation class for a UPS driver helper, but I will see.

I m just hoping I don t have to start working until after Thanksgiving. Without a phone call the first 2 weeks, I ve made plans for the days leading into Thanksgiving parent/teacher conferences, fundraising events, etc.

Does anyone around Chicago area know if the Antioch/Spring Grove/Zion/Waukegan area needs help this early on.

Today is 12/1/09. I am currently in the beginning stages of trying to land one of the seasonal DH slots with the Ontario CA Hub. For those unfamiliar with Ontario, I am in Southern California. Ontario is one of the major cities in a 2-county area referred to as the Inland Empire. The 2 counties that comprise the IE are Riverside and San Bernardino. The latter being the largest county in the US in terms of size land area. I m equidistant 30-40 minutes from Los Angeles, Orange County, Palm Springs, Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear and the Mojave Desert and a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas. ONT is an International Airport. California Speedway is 5 min away. On the flip side, unemployment here is among the highest in the Nation currently sitting at 14.9. I was watching the news one evening when it was reported that the Inland Empire held the 2 spot for highest unemployment rate in the Nation. Who held the top spot. Detroit. So jobs are scarce making opportunities, such as this one with UPS, precious. Especially with Christmas just 3 weeks away.

Like many of you, I plan to chart my progress in my quest for a Drivers Helper position. I read through this forum at least 3 times. Every piece of advice, every bit of insight, all of it - so so valuable. But it was the little, often overlooked details, the ones that seem silly, unimportant or of little concern to be the ones that really gave me a sense for what actually goes on during the hiring process.
